Can I Clone My Guinea Pig?
Can I Clone My Guinea Pig?
Guinea pigs hold a special place in many families, bringing joy, comfort and companionship in their own unique way. At Gemini Genetics, we believe every pet deserves a legacy, and while our primary focus is on cats, dogs, and horses, genetic preservation for guinea pigs is a way to offer hope for those who want to preserve the precious memory of their guinea pig.
What is Genetic Preservation?
Genetic preservation involves collecting a small skin sample from your guinea pig to store their DNA indefinitely for potential future pet cloning. Guinea pigs can unfortunately currently not be cloned with our partners ViaGen Pets & Equine, but preserving their genetics means that one day, should technology and demand align, it may be possible to clone your guinea pig. The genetic preservation service offers the unique opportunity to keep the pet cloning option open for your beloved guinea pig for if / when availability of cloning changes for this species.
How Does the Process Work?
1. Sample Collection: A veterinary professional collects a small skin sample from your guinea pig, usually post-mortem, up until 5 days after their passing. Your vet can follow the same instructions for cat and dog sample taking, which can be accessed here .
2. Safe Transport: The sample must be kept chilled, not frozen, and delivered to the laboratory within the 5 days following your guinea pig’s passing. This ensures the cells in your pet’s samples have the greatest chance of remaining viable for processing.
3. Laboratory Preservation: Your guinea pig’s skin samples are processed and preserved in our state-of-the-art laboratory
4. Liquid Nitrogen Storage: The processed samples are safely stored in our liquid nitrogen tanks, where they can remain until cloning becomes available. A monthly storage fee is applicable. Our prices can be found here
